The Senegalese-Moroccan company celebrates its first birthday
New wings for Air Senegal

Air Senegal International is the result of a partnership between Morocco and Senegal, via Royal Air Maroc and Air Senegal, which was created in February 2001.

ASI celebrated its first birthday on 17 January in Dakar. Mohamed Berrada, the Managing Director of RAM insisted on celebrating it in splendour, by unveiling the new wings of Air Senegal International : " the Moroccan Senegalese company will service its first direct Dakar-Paris connection flight, with 3 weekly flights, as from the end of March. Mohammed Berrada has thus challenged those who were pessimistic about the future of the company. ASI's financial results are largely positive. The Managing Director of RAM, who is the majority shareholder, with 51% of the capital, as against 49 % for the Senegalese State, is, as a result, the head of ASI. In a move to encourage its representative in Dakar, who is also the Managing Director of Air Senegal International, Mohamed El Aoufir, the Managing Director of Ram intends to put a Boeing 757 - 200 at the disposal of the Moroccan Senegalese company, for the Dakar-Paris connection, which will be serviced 4 times a week, by June 2002, before switching to one daily flight. The other bonus offered by the RAM Managing Director was his decision to change the Moroccan Senegalese company, to service the 2002 pilgrimage operation, from mid-January to mid-March, for which RAM has put a 580-seat Boeing 747 - 300 at the disposal of ASI, in order to transport 5,000 Senegalese pilgrims. Mohamed Berrada expressed his desire to make this operation successful, as it is crucial for the reputation of the young company.

Presents

It is acknowledged that Mohamed Berrada is a generous man. Among his offers was the future servicing of a Dakar-New-York flight, in case it proves to be a growth market. The future handling company will assist the planes belonging to RAM, ASI, and to other international companies, while the catergol (catering on board) company, will be established at Dakar Leopold Sédar Senghor airport within 8 to 9 months. " We are going to create our own in-flight meal production installation , which will not only cater for our customers, but also for those of other companies", Mr Berrada said. This will be built on 2,000 square metres, in cooperation with SOTORAM (a tourism company, that is a subsidiary of RAM), ASI and a Senegalese private consortium. According to Mohamed Berrada, Senegal is asking for more. Air Senegal International committed itself to implementing the tourism policy of the Senegalese government, by setting up a charter flight department , with the technical assistance of RAM.
